Short answer DigUp downloads an 865 MB EmbeddingGemma 2 model once on first launch, and Mac version 0.6.1 lets you pick the two model files manually in Settings → Storage if your network blocks the download.
Last updated · DigUp 0.6.1 for Mac, 0.7.0-beta.1 (beta) for Windows and Linux
When you open DigUp for the first time, it goes online to download its model while you choose the folders to index. This one-time download is separate from the app installer and separate from the first indexing pass that reads your files. For more details on how the model works on your computer, see Local AI File Search.
Model download vs. file indexing
The model download totals 865 MB. It consists of two parts: the text part (310 MB) and the image and audio encoders (555 MB). The documentation does not give a duration estimate for the network download itself.
The app download is separate: about 20 MB on a Mac (Mac download), and 40 to 140 MB on Windows and Linux (Linux download). Once the 865 MB model arrives, DigUp runs its first indexing pass on the folders you picked, showing a time estimate measured on your computer. If the model has already finished downloading and folder scanning is taking a long time, see Indexing Slow or Files Skipped.
Blocked model download on a Mac (v0.6.1)
A user reported in issue #25 that automatic model downloads fail when behind a firewall. In the Mac v0.6.1 release, DigUp added an option to load the two model files manually if your network blocks the download.
Step by step
1
Download the two model files on Mac 0.6.1
On a Mac running DigUp 0.6.1, if your network blocks the automatic download, download the two model files somewhere else.
2
Open Settings → Storage on Mac 0.6.1
In the Mac 0.6.1 app, open Settings, go to Storage, and click Use Files… to pick the two downloaded files.
3
Let DigUp check the files on Mac 0.6.1
DigUp 0.6.1 on a Mac checks the two files before it uses them.
Reported on Linux beta: “The model download stopped”
On the Linux beta, a user reported in issue #92 that first-run setup ended with the messages “The model download stopped” and “0 of 0 files searchable” even though the model files were downloaded. This is a user observation only, and as of 2026-10-16 there is no maintainer-confirmed fix in the checked sources.
For other setup and search questions, visit the main Troubleshooting page.
The 865 MB download is the EmbeddingGemma 2 model, made up of a 310 MB text part and 555 MB for the image and audio encoders. DigUp downloads it once when you first open the app.
How do I tell if the model download is slow or if indexing is taking time?
The 865 MB model downloads once during initial setup while you pick folders. After that, DigUp runs the first indexing pass over your chosen folders and shows how long each folder will take on your computer.
What can I do if my network blocks the model download on a Mac?
In DigUp 0.6.1 on a Mac, you can download the two model files somewhere else and select them using Use Files… in Settings → Storage. DigUp checks the files before using them.
Why does DigUp say "The model download stopped" on Linux?
A user reported in GitHub issue #92 that first-run setup ended with "The model download stopped" and "0 of 0 files searchable" even though the model files were downloaded. As of 2026-10-16, this report has no maintainer-confirmed fix in the checked sources.
