Indexing iCloud and OneDrive Files in DigUp

DigUp skips files that only live in the cloud, requiring you to download iCloud Drive or OneDrive items to your local disk before it can index and search them.

Current versions: 0.6.1 for Mac, 0.7.0-beta.1 (beta) for Windows and Linux; checked against DigUp's GitHub releases on October 15, 2026.

DigUp reads only the folders you choose on your computer. When you select cloud storage directories like iCloud Drive on macOS or OneDrive on Windows, DigUp never downloads files that only live in the cloud. Online-only items stay unindexed until they are downloaded to local storage.

Why DigUp skips cloud-only files

DigUp only reads your files; it never changes, moves or uploads them. DigUp ignores items that are stored exclusively in iCloud or OneDrive. Once a file exists locally on your drive, DigUp processes it like any other document, picture, audio recording or video.

Note that keeping files locally causes them to take up space on your disk. Once downloaded, new files are searchable a few seconds after they land on your drive. For PDFs, the first 30 pages are processed right away and the rest in the background, up to 5,000 pages per file.

Non-English folder names

In version 0.6.1, DigUp resolved an issue where chosen folders with accents or characters in Korean or Japanese, such as Google Drive’s “내 드라이브”, halted indexing across every folder. If your synced directories use non-English naming, ensure you run version 0.6.1 or later on your Mac.

Files in your folders remain on your machine. DigUp connects online only to download its 865 MB model once during initial setup and to check for software updates once a day.

Step by step

  1. Select your cloud folder in DigUp

Ensure your iCloud Drive or OneDrive directory is checked in DigUp's folder settings.

  2. Download items on a Mac

In Finder, Control-click the file or folder inside iCloud Drive and select Download Now.

  3. Download items on Windows

In File Explorer, right-click the file or folder in OneDrive and select Always keep on this device.

  4. Wait for DigUp to index the local files

Once downloaded to disk, the files are read automatically during DigUp's standard indexing pass.
