DigUp System Requirements for Mac, Windows, and Linux

Short answer DigUp requires an Apple Silicon Mac with macOS 14 or later, 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, or a 64-bit Intel or AMD Linux system, plus a one-time 865 MB model download.

Last updated · DigUp 0.6.1 for Mac, 0.7.0-beta.1 (beta) for Windows and Linux

This page lists the operating system, processor, graphics, and model storage facts documented for DigUp across desktop platforms. For setup instructions, see the guides for Mac, Windows, and Linux.

Operating system and processor compatibility

System OS requirement Processor support Current release Package size
Mac macOS 14 or later Apple Silicon (Intel Macs are not supported) 0.6.1 About 20 MB
Windows 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 64-bit 0.7.0-beta.1 (beta) 40 to 140 MB
Linux Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Mint 21 and newer (.deb), or other distributions (AppImage) 64-bit Intel and AMD processors 0.7.0-beta.1 (beta) 40 to 140 MB

Graphics card (GPU) and processor usage

A dedicated graphics card is not required. DigUp runs ggml-org’s 8-bit build of EmbeddingGemma 2 through llama.cpp:

  • Mac: Uses the Mac’s GPU with Metal.
  • Windows and Linux: Uses the GPU with Vulkan when a quick check at setup finds it faster than the processor and getting the same results. Otherwise, it runs on the processor.

On a processor alone, a picture takes a few seconds (about five on a 2017 laptop’s Core i5), so a large photo library can take hours during the first pass. You can check whether DigUp used your graphics card or processor on Windows and Linux by reading the last line of speed.log, which says "device": "gpu" or "cpu". See indexing slow or files skipped if indexing takes a long time.

Model download, disk space, and memory

The documentation does not specify a minimum RAM requirement or a total free disk space budget. It documents these component sizes:

  • Model download: 865 MB downloaded once on first launch, split between the text part (310 MB) and the image and audio encoders (555 MB). If the download is blocked, see model download failed.
  • Search memory: The model’s text part (~250 MB) loads only while you search. The indexing model runs in a separate helper process that quits when it is done.
  • Index size: Depends on your files. On a Mac, indexing all of llama.cpp for code search takes about 130 MB of index.

Feature differences by system

In the Windows and Linux beta (0.7.0-beta.1), two features are Mac-only for now:

  • Text inside screenshots is not read yet on Windows and Linux.
  • Old Word .doc files, RAW photos, and SVG pictures are only read on a Mac.

Questions

Does DigUp work on Intel Macs?

No. The Mac app requires an Apple Silicon Mac running macOS 14 or later.

What are the Windows system requirements for DigUp?

DigUp for Windows (0.7.0-beta.1) requires 64-bit Windows 10 or 11. It installs for your user account without admin rights.

Which Linux distributions and processors are supported?

The Linux beta packages (.deb and AppImage) are for 64-bit Intel and AMD processors. They work on Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Mint 21, and newer.

How much RAM does DigUp need?

DigUp's documentation does not state a minimum system RAM requirement. The indexing helper process quits when indexing finishes, and the search side loads the model's text part (~250 MB) only while you are searching.

Do I need a dedicated GPU on Windows or Linux?

No. On Windows and Linux, DigUp uses the GPU with Vulkan only when a quick check at setup finds it faster than the processor and producing the same results; otherwise, it runs on the processor.
